Apple iPad and College?

Yesterday, Apple unveiled its latest super-cool gadget the iPad: a cross between an iPhone and a Mac laptop. Some people are comparing it to Amazon’s reader the Kindle. Some are pondering whether the iPad will come to replace college textbooks as a lighter, cheaper, eco-friendlier alternative.

I’m sure that like all new technology, this thing will quickly become outdated. But in the meantime I wonder: how will the iPad affect college classrooms?

You are right! It’s like mouse as a pointing device. It was a new thing 30 years ago Coming from PARC of Xerox and popularized by Apple with its first Macintosh.. 30 years after that the mice are always here. Even if the new iPad ask now only some fingers to manipulate. But I don’t think that iPad will oudate the mouse as a pointing device any time soon.

And the iPad itself as a concept is a very old idea. Imagine having – with ergonomically reading quality (very very important…) – all your law or medical libraries in a one pound tablet!

Personaly I prefer read fiction on paper books. But for reading technical or nomenclature information I accept to use an electronic tablet.

The iPad itself will surely be replaced by a new model from Apple or from the competition, but I don’t think that the concept of electronic pad or slate will be oudated for a long time. Too much potential and usefullness

At NC State, we put the iPad in the hands of five student bloggers to see what they really think. The results were surprising… it seems universally loathed as a educational resource so far.
